More Bad News Today

Both my mother and my sister have been told their cancers have come back.

My sister who had bone cancer, now has cervical cancer which they will have to burn off every few months. She told me she would like to have a hysterectomy just to get rid of it all but the doctor won’t bucge and prefers to keep burning the cancer lesions off as they recur.

My mother has been told she now has cancer throughout her uterus and cervix and the doctor has told her when she asked about a hysterectomy that it was too widespread for that and can only be treated with radiation and chemotherapy. I’m going up to see her this weekend. She will be going for more scans on Monday but will not see the doctor again until the 16th July because the doctor is on holiday and it is then she’ll know what type of treatment she will get.

She was on Tamoxifen for about five years after her lumpectomy and uterine cancer is a side-effect of that treatment. I’m glad now to have swapped to Arimidex and that I was only on Tamoxifen for 6 months. But it has strengthened my determination to make sure I get a full body scan (CT scan and bone scan) at least once every twelve months. I’m sure she must have had these cancers lurking there for a while but she has never had any scans done after the initial treatment after her operation. She has been feeling tired for no real reason for the last five months or so and was told to eat more meat to get more iron as well as being given Vitamin B injections and it was only when she started bleeding again that they ordered a scan. If she had had a yearly full scan maybe this would have been picked up much earlier.

My oncologist doesn’t think it is necessary when I raised having yearly bone scans and full body CT scan and thinks three month scans of my upper body is all that is required. I would have no idea what bone pain feels like so I would rather have a bone scan to double check and put my mind at ease on that front and I would also like the reassurance of knowing that the cancer hasn’t spread below.

I got this bit of trivia on a news letter from a travel company.

A FAIRYTALE WEDDING IN ANTARCTICA

Whether it is a humpback whale gliding past your Zodiac closer than you ever thought possible or an iceberg casting an impossibly big shadow over our ship, Antarctica is a place full of wonder and surprise – but the antics aren’t always limited to the wildlife.

During the Peregrine Mariner’s last voyage of the summer, passengers Manfred Hubner and Brigitte Wagner requested that Captain Poskonny marry them in Antarctica – could there be a grander setting?

At the appointed time, the Captain, resplendent in his dress uniform, and a small group of invited guests climbed to the ship’s bridge. The champagne was chilled and the guests quietly excited. The Captain – in command as always – didn’t miss a beat and only raisedt a slight smile when the bride and groom arrived in full-size penguin costumes!

The ceremony was conducted with due pomp, photos were taken and congratulations abounded – all on a working bridge in Antarctica. All the while, the Watch Officer quietly kept the ship safe in an ice-studded bay. It will be a great story when they get home to Sweden!

The question is would you really get married in a penguin suit? *g*
